Introducing, the silked serama, the perfect breed for any chicken lover who has a small space to work with or for those of us who dream of having little house chickens fluffing about the home. Demure in disposition while boasting high beauty. These birds hold up well with all of our breeds if put in a mixed flock but really do make a darling group all of their own.

These birds are so gentle they have been used as therapy chickens for senior citizens with dementia here in Sonoma County. They are happy to sit on a warm lap or poke about in the understory of some trees.

The sounds they make are very pleasing to the ear and the eggs the females lay are roughly 1/2 the size of a regular chicken egg.

Our silked serama have a few smooth feather hens in with their group for company. There is a 20% chance that your serama will grow up to have smooth feathers like a traditional chicken but the size and sweetness will be the same.

If you have been wanting silkie chickens but have been turned off from the fuzzy legs and feet this will be your dream breed. We will be offering our silked serama in limited quantities in the following colors: buttercream, mottled, black and grey. Hatching them is a wee bit trickier than smooth feathered seramas and it is for that reason we are not offering hatching eggs from our serama. Serama are also quite smaller than our other breeds of chicks and for this reason we do not ship our serama – they are only available for pickup directly from the farm.

Seramas are the world’s smallest recognized chicken breed, originating in Malaysia and bred for centuries as companion birds rather than as livestock. An adult Serama weighs less than a pound. The eggs are barely larger than a quail’s. They are, by a wide margin, the cutest chickens we keep.

Our Seramas come in both silked and smooth feather types (roughly 80% silked, 20% smooth). The silked variety is a wonderful alternative for keepers who love the Silkie look but don’t want the feathered legs. Care Basics

• Seramas can be kept indoors as house chickens — they’re that gentle and small.

• Use bantam-appropriate chick starter and small feeders/waterers — standard equipment may be too large.

Pricing

Shipping is a flat $70 for up to 25 chicks via overnight USPS Express. Seasonal minimums: 10 chicks March-May and October, 6 chicks June-September. Local farm pickup is free with no minimum (we recommend at least two chicks so none is brooded alone).

Common Questions

Why don’t you ship Seramas?

They’re too small and fragile to safely travel via overnight mail. Even with our usual gel hydration and warmed packaging, the chicks lose too much body heat in transit. Local pickup at our farm in Sebastopol is required for all Serama orders.

What’s a silked Serama?

A Serama with the Silkie feather gene — feathers that look more like fur than typical chicken plumage. Unlike standard Silkies, our silked Seramas don’t have feathered legs, so they’re a great choice if you love the silked look but want clean legs.

Can Seramas be kept as house chickens?

Yes — they’re one of the few breeds people genuinely keep indoors. They are clean if managed (litter-box training is possible with patience), small enough for apartments, and tame enough to ride around on a shoulder.

Are they really used as therapy chickens?

Yes. We work with senior care facilities in Sonoma County and Seramas are the breed we bring for visits — their tiny size, calm temperament, and tolerance for handling make them ideal for residents with dementia or mobility limitations.
